There has been widespread attention on the potential threats from AI - from disinformation and environmental harms to risks of autonomous warfare and loss of control. Yet there is no mass movement addressing rapidly advancing AI risks. Why not? And what can be done about it?

We will share findings from our new study exploring which AI harms and risks are most likely to persuade people to act on their concerns. We test the effect of reading about different AI risk areas - from job displacement and disinformation to automated weapons and extinction risks - and measure their impact on people's concern about AI and their willingness to act on it.

We'll be joined by others working to engage the public on AI safety, with plenty of time for discussion.

Whether you're an activist, campaigner, funder, researcher or engaged citizen, this event will offer practical, evidence-based insights on what moves people from concern to action on AI.

Date: 11 March, 17:00 GMT Location: Online (via Zoom). Link shared after booking. Cost: Free

Sign up on Eventbrite here. The full report (coming later this month) was funded by Changing Ideas. You see our initial first findings from the new reporting in our blog from 26 January.

And to read more of work on this topic, check out our 2025 report, “AI is on the march. Is the AI safety movement ready?” which mapped the emerging landscape of civil society action on AI risks.

Social Change Lab conducts research on social movements to understand their impact. Through evidence-based analysis, we help movements and funders maximise their impact. Find all our research at socialchangelab.org
